Roncalli teachers and staff members traveled to Italy in June to visit sites that were important to the school’s namesake, Cardinal Angelo Roncalli, who upon being elected pope in 1958 took the name of John XXIII.
Their 10-day trip included stops in Bergamo, Venice, Assissi and Rome and at Holy Mary Catholic Church in Sotte il Monte, where Roncalli was baptized in 1881. They also met with 99-year-old Cardinal Capovilla, who served as secretary to Pope John. In Rome the group had a front-row view of Pope Francis as he passed in his pope mobile.
