Schmidt, chairman of Avon High School’s social studies department and coach of the boys varsity soccer team, was also named Midwest Advanced Placement Teacher of the Year by the College Board in 2013.
He led the Orioles to the 2A state finals in 2013, losing to Crown Point. His squads have compiled a 149-30-25 record while making it to the Final Four twice and winning five regionals and eight sectionals. He is a two-time Coach of the Year honoree.
“Phil was a topnotch student and a great soccer and basketball player while at Lutheran,” said athletic director Tom Finchum, who nominated Schmidt. “He is one of only two basketball players in school history to average at least 20 points per game and 10 rebounds per game for a season.
“He was a member of the school’s first soccer sectional championship team in 1994 and was the head coach when we won our first regional championship in 1999.”
Schmidt earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Butler University and the University of Indianapolis, respectively.
