SUBMITTED PHOTO Students from the publications department at Southport High School traveled to Washington, D.C., for the Journalism Education Association/National Scholastic Press Association fall convention, where they attended specialized classes, listened to a keynote speech by ESPN “SportsCenter” anchor Jay Harris and competed in contests. Four seniors won awards, with honorable mention going to Vanessa Abplanalp for editorial writing. Awards of Excellence went to Maddison Bethel-Brown for photography portfolio, Tori Updike for copy editing and caption and headline writing and Nathan Cooper for yearbook copy. The students toured the U.S. Capitol building, the National Mall and the Newseum.
