The Rev. Patrick Doyle and Ed Merkling were named Roncalli’s Honorary Alumni of the Year during homecoming festivities Sept. 25.
Doyle spent the first 30 years of priesthood ministering to Indianapolis’ North Deanery parishes before being appointed pastor of Nativity in 2005.
According to one parishioner, Doyle was the “bolt of energy” that Nativity needed at the time to spark that parish’s new growth.
Merkling is in his 18th year leading Roncalli’s swimming and diving program. He has coached one state champion, 11 state qualifiers, three relay state finalists and numerous sectional champions and finalists. Many of his athletes have received recognition at the state and national levels in academics.
The IUPUI Sport Complex recently promoted Merkling, a veteran IU Natatorium staff member of more than 20 years, to assistant director. He and his wife, Bonni have two children, Sam and Carlee.
