Franklin Central 132-pounder Jordan Vaughn and Perry Meridian 195-pounder Tristen Tonte wrestled for state championships Saturday evening at Bankers Life Fieldhouse but came up short of emerging victorious.
Vaughn (43-6) lost 16-5 to Evansville Mater Dei’s Nick Lee. He reached the championship by defeating Cass’ Jarret Carden, Bloomington South’s Griffin Schemer and East Noble’s Connor Knapp.

Tonte (43-3) was pinned by Cathedral’s Blake Rypel in 3 minutes, 13 seconds. Tonte, the starting quarterback on the Falcons’ football team, made his way to the finals by defeating Portage’s Matt Hedrick, York’s Myron Howard and Carmel’s Sam Hipple.
Roncalli 138-pounder Brandon James (44-1) claimed third place by defeating Kyle Todrank of Gibson Southern. James dropped his first match of the season when he was pinned in the semifinals. Earlier he pinned Ben Castleberry of New Albany and defeated York’s Brad Laughlin.

Beech Grove’s Evan Smiley (41-7), 145 pounds, was fourth after losing 3-1 to Alston Bane of Richmond.
Wrestlers who did not advance through the quarterfinals were Perry’s Cornelious Elliot II (40-5) and Ngun Uk (41-5), Roncalli’s Conner James (44-2), Beech Grove’s Ethan Smiley (34-8) and Center Grove’s Gleason Mappes (23-20).

Perry Meridian tied for sixth, while Penn won its first wrestling title.

Swimmers advance to state
Center Grove’s 200-yard medley relay team and Roncalli swimmer Eddie Huck grabbed sectional championships Saturday at Franklin to advance to Friday’s preliminary round of the state finals at 6 p.m. Friday at the Indiana University Natatorium at IUPUI. Finals start at 1 p.m. Saturday.
Huck’s time in the 200 individual medley was 1 minute, 57.6 seconds, about 2.3 seconds ahead of runner-up Alex Krasutsky of Center Grove. Huck also won the Marion County title.

The Trojans captured the opening relay in 1:38.2, with Grant Wasserman, Alex Krasutsky, Chase Bettner and Dan Godfrey winning by less than a half-second ahead of Roncalli with Huck, Nolan Dalman, Adam Pongracz and Andrew Shuck. Huck also was on the Rebels’ runner-up 400 freestyle relay team.

Perry Meridian’s Christian Buchanan and William Combs and Center Grove’s Chandler Head qualified for the diving regional Tuesday at Plainfield, but the results were unavailable at press time. Mooresville’s Ashton Johnson edged Buchanan 425.55-423.05 for the sectional title.

Roncalli swimming and diving coach Ed Merkling was named the outstanding coach at the Franklin Sectional.
Franklin won the title; Center Grove was second, Roncalli third, Perry Meridian fourth, Southport eighth and Greenwood 10th.

At Lawrence Central, Franklin Central’s 200 medley relay team of Matthew Monday, Rocky Ramsey, Charlie Boomershine and Jonathan Mark was second to North Central by 3.92 seconds. Mark was fourth in the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly with times 22.66 and 54.01, respectively.
