Whiteland’s girls’ track and field team successfully defended its Mid-State Championship last week at Decatur Central.
The Warriors won by 12.5 points (152.5-140) over runner-up Franklin.
Whiteland brought home blue ribbons in four events: 4x100 relay with Sydney Rogers, Emma Gill, Marissa Kratowicz, and Elnora Stevenson, 50.21 seconds; 3200 run, Tori Jackson, 11:31.43; and discus, Brooklyn Taylor, 129 feet, 9 inches.
Greenwood sophomore Emma Gardner won the shot put with a toss of 40 feet, 4.25 inches.
Whiteland’s boys’ team was third behind champion Plainfield and runner-up Mooresville. Whiteland’s Scott Parrish captured the pole vault at 14 feet.
LACROSSE SENIOR NIGHT
Southport honored eight seniors on its girls lacrosse team during senior night May 3 against Lawrence North. Seniors Lela Scott, La’Veya Dates, Jackie Coy, Dariely Raudales, Claudine Umumporeze, Jazlyn Jackson, Maria Bujan, and Musandi Phiri celebrated their final season with teammates, family and fans. Southport started the scoring within the first few minutes of the game with a goal from Umumporeze, her first of three goals in the first half. Junior Hailee Schultz and sophomore Sydney Hartman also had two goals each for the Cards. The visiting Wildcats prevailed, 8-7. Defensively, junior Raven Fields, Veya Dates, and Lela Scott all had interceptions and turnovers for the Cards.
SOUTHPORT VOLLEYBALL
Four senior boys’ volleyball players were honored May 3 in Southport Fieldhouse as Southport enjoyed senior night with a 3-0 sweep of visiting Bishop Chatard (25-17, 25-19, 25-24). Seniors Ca Mang, Benedict Bendlin, Van Zo, and Lal John were the pre-game honorees. Southport is ranked No.9 among boys’ volleyball teams in the state.
In the Midwest Battle Tournament Friday and Saturday, the No. 9 Cardinals opened against No. 1 Fishers and fell in a thrilling first set, 29-27 and then lost the second set 25-15. Southport recovered and won its second match against Trinity (Ky.) 25-13 and 25-11.
Then Saturday, Lincoln-Way East (Ill.) dropped the Cardinals 25-11, 25-16 and closed their fourth match in two days against Cathedral, falling to the Irish 25-21 and 25-15.
GIRLS’ TENNIS
Southport’s girls’ tennis team swept Lawrence Central, 5-0 May 2. Singles winners for the Cards were Carlie Streit, 6-2, 6-4; Avanell Traylor, 6-0, 6-1; and Mary Cer, 6-0, 6-0. Winning doubles teams were Ngun Mawi and Esther Pui 6-1, 6-0, and Nomi Par and Dawt Par 6-0, 6-0.
BOYS’ GOLF
Greenwood Christian Academy edged Southport’s boys’ golf team by a mere three strokes, 171-174, May 2 at Southern Dunes. Freshman Tyler Pierle led the Cardinals with a 9-hole 40. Senior JT Ferguson shot a 44 and classmate Sam Brookshire and junior Evan Meredith each shot 45.
