The University of Indianapolis men’s basketball team closed out its regular season by defeating St. Joseph’s 86-73 Feb. 24.
The Greyhounds (20-6, 14-2 Great Lakes Valley Conference) were led by four players in double figures: Ernest Maize 15, Lucas Barker 14, Jordan Loyd 13 and Eric Davidson 11.
UIndy, which posted its fifth consecutive 20-win season, will meet Lewis University (Illinois) in Thursday’s opening round of the conference tournament in St. Charles, Mo.
The ladies (10-19, 7-11) defeated McKendree (Illinois) 60-47 Sunday in first-round action. Princess German scored 22 points and Sarah Costello added 16 points in their victory. Next up is Lewis at 9:30 p.m. Thursday in St. Charles.
Up at Marian University, the men’s team (19-12, 7-11 Crossroads Conference) lost to St. Francis 70-63 in the opening round of the conference tourney.
The lady Knights (27-6, 16-2) lost to Indiana Wesleyan 68-64 Monday night the conference championship game. They open play in the NAIA tournament Wednesday, March 9, in Sioux City.
They reached the championship game by defeating Spring Arbor (Michigan) 78-50 Friday. Lakan Hasser-Smith scored a game-high 22 points while grabbing five rebounds. Roncalli graduate Kelli Kirkhoff had 11 points and four rebounds, Jessica Almeida scored 10 points and had four rebounds and Jenna Sullivan had seven points and 13 rebounds.
Marian defeated Taylor 72-56 in the quarterfinals behind the 17 points of Hasser-Smith and Kirkhoff’s 15 points, four assists and three steals.
