The Cardinals opened the event with its first win of the season against No. 17 Castle 71-62. Southport was led by Brevin Jefferson, 21 points; Brian Miller, 16; and Chaz Hines, 13 points and 10 rebounds.
The Cardinals had a season-high 20 assists and led by 14 in the fourth quarter.
“We really shared the ball,” Southport coach Kyle Simpson said. “We moved the ball and were patient. We also had some good minutes from our bench.”
In the third game, Center Grove 6-9 junior Trayce Jackson-Davis thrilled the crowd with 33 points, eight rebounds and seven blocked shots against Hamilton Southeastern. The Trojans trailed 43-34 late in the third quarter but rallied to push the game into overtime, eventually losing 65-63.
A standing-room-only crowd saw heralded New Albany senior Romeo Langford pour in 42 points as the No. 1 Bulldogs trounced No. 9 Fort Wayne North 97-59.
