I have been following the women’s basketball team at Marian University, which is under the helm of Katie Gearlds for the third year.
Gearlds’ basketball career includes a state championship while playing at Beech Grove High School, four years as a Purdue Boilermaker and several years at the professional level.
One of her assistant coaches is brother-in-law Mark Parker, who had been the girls coach at Beech Grove and is a member of the Beech Grove Police Department. He and his canine partner, Wyatt, work throughout Beech Grove Schools.
A couple of Gearlds’ players have connections to the Southside: Sophomore Kellie Kirkhoff is a Roncalli graduate, and freshman Amanda Annee hails from Perry Meridian.
It was announced before the first regular-season game that starting senior guard Lakan Hasser-Smith was the team’s all-time leading scorer with 1,465 points. She broke the record set by Terrill Reed during her career from 1985-89.
Marian, No. 9 in NAIA, upped its record to 6-1 by defeating defending Crossroads League champion and No. 5 Indiana Wesleyan University 67-59 Nov. 24 before losing to Indiana University Northwest 73-66 Saturday.
Kirkhoff was the leading scorer against Indiana Wesleyan with 16 points, hitting 4-of-5 3-pointers. She had been nursing a sore leg or knee but was playing with confidence.
The men’s team (9-0) has a new coach in Carson Harris, and the squad features sophomore Curtis Green from Perry Meridian and senior Dion Smith from Franklin Central.
Smith and Green scored 15 and 10 points, respectively, in their 85-72 win over Indiana Wesleyan Nov. 24. The Knights blasted Simmons College of Kentucky 93-60 Saturday.
It’s a lot much fun to attend the games; you never know who you run into. I bumped into Steve Heath of Heath’s Market at one of the women’s games.
Both teams play Taylor on Saturday.
Shonk will provide updates on Marian’s and the University of Indianapolis’ women’s and men’s basketball teams throughout the season.
