Seven high school wrestlers will represent the Southside at the state wrestling finals Friday and Saturday at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.
Perry Meridian sophomore Noah Warren won the 160-pound class at the New Castle Regional with a 3-0 decision over Richmond junior Alston Bane (48-1).
Franklin Central senior Jordan Vaughn (43-2) won the 145-pound match with a 3-2 triumph over North Central’s Derrick Motley. Vaughn dominated three opponents to reach to final match.
Also qualifying were runners-up Ethan Smiley (40-5), Beech Grove, 120 pounds; and Perry Meridian’s Sammy Fair, (32-6) 106; DJ Brookbank (32-8), 152; and Brett Johnson (35-3), 152; and third-place finisher Chris Ridle (29-9), 285.
Perry Meridian was third in team points (94.5), trailing runner-up Cathedral (123.5) and champion Warren Central (163.5).
State finals begin with first-round matches Friday at 6 p.m. and resume Saturday at 9:30 a.m. with the finals at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $8 per session.
Divers finish third and fifth
Center Grove senior Rachel Smallwood took third place in 1-meter diving Saturday in girls swimming and diving championships at the IUPUI Natatorium.
Smallwood scored 470.55 points after placing second in the first round.
Greenwood senior Krista Jones was fifth with 431.05 points, moving up from 12th place in the first round.
Franklin Central junior swimmer Jamie Leming (57.37 seconds) posted the Southside’s best finish of 11th in the 100-yard backstroke.
