With another high school sports season on the horizon, it’s fitting to look back at the accomplishments of area teams during the 2015-16 campaign.
Beech Grove
Football: earned co-Indiana Crossroads Conference championship en route to second consecutive winning season, a first since 1995.
Volleyball: won the Blackhawk Invitational with four straight victories at Cowan High School.
Boys cross-country: conference champs.
Center Grove
Football: went undefeated and won second state title by downing Penn 28-16.
Boys soccer: won first state title by defeating West Lafayette Harrison 4-0.
Girls tennis: reached the state finals.
Franklin Central
Softball: won Marion County championship and a regional title.
Boys basketball: cruised to another sectional championship for the fourth consecutive year.
Girls cross-country: 2015 Marion County champions.
Greenwood
Girls volleyball: won most games since 2008.
Boys cross-country: Michael Parrish and Hunter Smith qualified for state.
Girls basketball: senior guard Holly Hoopingarner named Indiana All-Star.
Greenwood Christian
Girls cross-country: Alexandra Dalton finished first in regionals.
Baseball: team won its third consecutive sectional title.
Girls basketball: runner-up in West Division of Pioneer Conference
Lutheran
Football: earned a sectional title by outscoring three opponents 166-66.
Volleyball: came within one match of reaching the state title game; lost to Christian Academy in the Loogootee Semistate.
Softball: had little trouble winning sectionals; outscored opponents 43-1.
Manual
Football: snapped a 20-game losing streak with a 50-0 win over Washington.
Baseball: started the season 8-0.
Boys basketball: junior swingman Couvesier Mccully led the state in scoring at one point in the season with an average of more than 30 points per game.
Perry Meridian
Boys tennis: reached state finals.
Boys golf: won Marion County title.
Volleyball: upset Roncalli for a sectional championship.
Roncalli
Baseball: won first state title with a 3-2 win over Zionsville.
Football: one game short of reaching the state title game at Lucas Oil Stadium after losing to East Central in the semistate.
Girls basketball: led by McDonald’s All-American Lindsey Corsaro, the Rebels won Marion County and regional championships.
Southport
Boys basketball: reached final four for the first time since 1990.
Girls tennis: won fifth straight tennis sectional.
Football: freshman team went undefeated.
