Giving rise to Southport’s hardwood fortunes are (front) senior Andrea Vidaurre; (back) junior Ashley Raisor, seniors Savannah Edington and Tiara Wright and sophomore Lexie Green.
PictureFirst-year Southport coach Adam Morelock formerly coached at Western High School near Kokomo.
SOUTHPORT (15-7) – Cardinals racked up first winning season since 2007 … earned three-way share of Conference Indiana title … Morelock takes over after one-year turnaround by Bart Collins … lost inside-outside attack of 6-2 Jaelencia Williams (15.7 points, 9.3 rebounds) and team leader Emma DeHart (16.1 points) to graduation … must find a way to replace 70 percent of offense … returning role players must step up … seniors Tiana Wright, Andrea Vidaurre and Savannah Edington, recovered from knee surgery … soph Lexi Green, stronger and lengthier and brings her cross-country determination to the floor, and junior Ashley Raisor will start … Cards hope to push the pace with the ball and communicate better on defense.

Coach’s comments: “We had a good summer so the girls are getting used to me. We have a lot of girls back that we are asking more of them than in the past. I am a team-orientated coach, so we’re going to work on going eight to 10 deep with no letdown. The girls respond when it’s everyone’s game. We want to be unselfish and play together. The ability is there, we just have to pull it out.

“The girls have to step up and play with confidence, so they don’t hesitate to do what they need to do on the floor. There is some redemption on the seniors’ minds. They have some things to prove and that means they’re hungry. We have seven sophomores, so it will be interesting to see who develops the fastest.”
