SOUTHPORT (7-15) – Coach Brand hopes to re-energize program ... succeeds Kyle Simpson (six years, 74-68) .. Cards 13-31 since reaching 2016 semistate … graduated two nonstarters but football standouts Eddie Schott, a midyear graduate, and Ryan Lezon not back … seniors 6-8 Chaz Hinds (12.4 points, 4.9 rebounds) and 6-1 Brian Miller (8.9 points) and 6-1 junior Brevin Jefferson (10.8 points, 4.6 rebounds, 3.7 assists) returning starters … senior 5-11 Michael Long also returns with 6-1 Artie Boyd … 6-5 junior Matthew Munoz savvy player … 10-deep with senior Jacob Smith and JV grads Jayaun Moore, Antwuan Payne and Landon Godsey … stresses fundamentals … solid on offense and defense … Cards have some size and speed … at home against Ben Davis Dec. 1.

Coach’s comments: “This group is giving me their best effort, and I’ve been pushing them pretty hard. I think they are seeing what happens when you work hard. We talk about maximum effort and maximum focus. We want to develop winning habits. We do have a lot of unknowns. Chaz is developing as a leader and has worked through some nagging injuries. It will be interesting to see how Munoz and Godsey develop. We’re sorting through where our depth comes from. There will be some tweaks made throughout the season. I won’t judge this season on wins and losses. Instead, I will judge this season on the way these players understand the standards that are set and how they live up to those standards.”
