Looking for more defensive stops are Southport’s D-back Jordan Tweedy, linebacker Steven Pagel, D-back Ben Morlan, Demetrick Bryant and linebackers Brayon Hogan and Tyler Betz.
PictureSouthport senior quarterback Eddie Schott’s (yellow jersey) receivers are Lucas Willoughby Rashawn Haskins, sophomore Ryan Lezon, who averaged 39.8 yards per punt last year, Matt Munoz and Kobe Davis.
SOUTHPORT (5-5) – Cardinals expect to be in mix for Conference Indiana title … six straight league winning campaigns with title in 2013 … coach Brandon Winters (11-10) in third year … offense has experience at all skilled positions … senior quarterback/Ball State commit Eddie Schott (1,921 yards passing, 64.2 completion percentage, 17 TDs) leads offense … plenty of seasoned receivers to hit: senior Rashawn Haskins (61 catches, 679 yards, seven TDs), junior Ryan Lezon (51 catches, 738 yards, eight TDs), seniors Lucas Willoughby, Kobe Davis and Max Miller and 6-5 junior tight end Matt Munoz. Leading rusher Jaylen Caldwell, a senior (5.8 yards per carry), has backfield load with junior LaMarco Yates out (knee injury) … O-line led by seniors Brian Maldonado and Justin Chambers and junior Peyton Cheatham … mixture on defense with junior linemen Tyler Betz and Kaleb Dehner coming from O-line … linebackers are Steven Pagel, former lineman Payton Frye and Brayan Hogan … D-backs solid with leading returning tackler, junior Jordan Tweddy, and soph Ben Morlan.

Coach’s comments: “Our offensive skills are as good as we’ve had in a long time. We need our inexperienced guys to play well on the line. We have some pieces up front; they need to work hard and contribute early. Eddie Schott is an extremely talented quarterback, very smart, tough, a great leader. We have all our players returning at the skilled positions on offense. We are deep with our receivers. Seven guys will split time on the offensive line. Our defense has some experience back, but we will be young at spots. “The D-line will be by committee; we will be moving guys into positions where they show strength. We will have to be ready to play early against Roncalli, Perry Meridian and Columbus North. We have to stay healthy because we don’t have depth. We need our young guys, especially on the offensive and defensive lines, to step up early. The front end of our schedule is difficult.”
