Veteran Southport coach Scott Whitlock goes over the practice schedule with the Cardinals’ only seniors, right fielder/pitcher James Sheets and pitcher Charlie Bradley.
Southport (6-19) – Definitely seeking more than six wins this season … pitchers Charlie Bradley and James Sheets are team’s only seniors … deceivingly young team … Cards have depth and baseball savvy with juniors and sophomores … coach Scott Whitlock can call on eight players who can pitch, including No. 1 starter Quinton Mosley and Chris Matthews … second-year center fielder Matt Johnston controls outfield … Dustin Church starts at second for third season … Mosley also plays shortstop with Bradley at third … Scott Rippy moves from third to catcher … no out-of-state trips this season … Cards at Holder Field against Austin at 5p.m. Friday and Lanesville at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Coach’s comments: “This year’s team will have to bring it every day; that’s the mindset they must have. We have such a tough schedule that we have to play strong from the outset. We only have two seniors, but we have back-to-back classes (junior and sophomore) that are really deep. They are really baseball-orientated, so that should help us. I feel comfortable with our pitchers because our freshmen have experience with elite travel teams. We will be looking for some pop at the plate, and that has to come from our younger players.

Defensively we should be solid all the way around; our outfield has speed. Our base running will be a strength. These kids are developing the mindset of stretching singles into doubles and doubles into triples.”
