The Southside’s two highest ranked 4A softball teams, No. 6 Greenwood and No. 8 Franklin Central, collide at 10 a.m. Monday in the opening round of the mine-filled Franklin Sectional, which features No. 5 New Palestine in the opposite bracket.

The Flashes, coached by veteran Kathy Striker, want to go one step beyond the 2013 season when they fell to Portage in the 4A state championship game.
The two teams met earlier this month with Greenwood prevailing 13-7 at FC. The Flashes left 12 runners on base.

The Woodmen, who were defeated 3-2 Monday by New Pal,  enter the tournament with a solid one-two pitching punch in University of Georgia recruit Brittany Gray (9-1, 0.52 ERA) and Megan Overton (9-1). Greenwood is hitting .360; Franklin Central carries a .343 batting average.

Greenwood fell from No. 2 to No. 8 after losing to Decatur Central in a Mid-State contest but recovered to capture the Johnson County tourney by edging Center Grove 3-2.

The second game in the first round will pit Franklin against Whiteland at noon. The winners will meet at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 27, with Center Grove playing New Palestine at 7:30 p.m. The title game is at 5:30 p.m. May 28 and could feature two top-10 teams.

Roncalli is the 4A Sectional 10 host and meets Lawrence North in Monday’s opener at 11 a.m. The winner meets the Warren Central-Lawrence Central winner at 5:30 p.m. May 27, followed by Tech and Cathedral at 7:30 p.m. The championship game is May 31 at 2 p.m.

Perry Meridian opens the 4A Decatur Central Sectional against Northwest at noon Monday, with Southport facing Decatur Central at 2 p.m. The winners meet Tuesday at 5:30 p.m., with Ben Davis and Pike playing at 7:30 p.m. The title game is May 31 at noon.

Improved Beech Grove tackles 3A sectional host Guerin Catholic at 11 a.m. Monday, with the winner playing Herron at 7 p.m. May 27. Chatard and Marshall open at 5 p.m. May 27. The winners advance to the championship game at 6 p.m. May 28.

In 2A, Manual meets Irvington Prep at 7 p.m. May 27 in the Ritter Sectional.
Sectional host Lutheran, ranked No. 11 in Class A, meets Eminence at 5 p.m. May 27. The opposite bracket includes the Deaf School, Bethesda Christian and University. The championship game is May 29 at 5 p.m.
Greenwood Christian Academy meets Edinburgh in the Class A Hauser Sectional at 5 p.m. Monday.
