Center Grove junior golfer Erica Shepherd has a date in Paris in mid-September as she has been named to the U.S. Junior Ryder Cup that will compete against Europe Sept. 24 and 25.
The Southside standout, a Duke University commit and the oldest girl on the team at 17, was fifth in Ryder Cup qualifying points after faltering last week in the second round of the U.S. Junior Girls Championship, which she won in 2017. She was a member of the 2017 Ping Junior Solheim Cup.
Earlier this season she was a semifinalist in the U.S. Women’s Four-Ball Championship. Last week in the junior championship in California, Shepherd qualified seventh for match play after shooting a 3-under 36-hole 139 at Pebble Hills Golf Course. She defeated first-round foe Elizabeth Caldarelli of Arizona 4 and 3 in a fog-delayed match that began late Wednesday.
In the second round of match play Thursday, Shepherd could not overcome 26th-seeded Valery Plata’s fast start and fell to the Colombian golfer 3 and 2. She is competing this week in the 29th AJGA Wyndham Cup in Plymouth, Mass., and is among 40 golfers in the East vs. West competition that began Tuesday.
She is entered in the LPGA Women in Tech Championship Aug. 16-19 at the Brickyard Crossing Golf Course in Speedway. She fired a 71-68 – 139 to make the cut last year but shot an 11-over 83 in the final round.
