Some of the Southside’s top athletes will close their high school careers in state track and field finals at Indiana University’s Robert C. Haugh Track & Field Complex in Bloomington.
In Saturday’s girls meet, Paige Saylor of Roncalli will compete in the long jump and on the Rebels’ 4x400-meter relay team. Saylor holds school records in the 100-meter dash and long jump and in two relays. She was sixth in long jump in last year’s finals and is a back-to-back regional champion in long jump.
She was named Roncalli’s 2017 Most Outstanding Female Athlete last month and was the starting point guard on the basketball team.
Southport senior Erin Sullivan is among the top six competitors in the 800. She qualified for the finals by edging Katherine Modrall of Brebeuf by 51-hundreths of a second but missed winning the 1,600 by less than two-tenths of second. Sullivan won the 800, 1,600 and was on the winning 4x800 relay team at the Ben Davis Sectional
Center Grove senior Kylie Falcone is a threat to win the pole vault, while teammate Valerie Clark closes out her distance running career.
In the boys finals, CG senior Grant Mason is among the top three seeds in 100 and 200 dashes. The senior-laden Trojans also feature Christian Goines and Trevor Hohlt in hurdles and relay members Hohlt, Titus McCoy and Russell Yeast.
Field events start at 3 p.m. with finals at 6 p.m. each day; admission is $10 per day.
