Perry Meridian faced sectional host Warren Central under weeklong difficult circumstances.
On Monday (Oct. 31), assistant football coach Damian Givens, 50, passed away at home. Givens was the defensive line coach and was an in-school suspension supervisor at the high school. This was his first year to teach and coach at PMHS.
Coach Brett Cooper was informed of Givens’ death Tuesday morning.
Givens was instrumental in the Falcons’ 4-7 season, their most wins since 2015. The Falcons began preparing to face Warren Central after defeating Tech in their sectional opener for their second sectional game triumph since 2010.
Cooper explained that it would have been Givens’ desire that the Falcons continue to prepare for their sectional championship game.
This was Givens’ first season with the Falcons under Cooper who continues to rebuild the football program.
Givens is a 1990 Indianapolis Washington graduate. He coached at Manual, Washington, and Arlington high schools and served as head coach at Shortridge High School in 2016 and then at Phalen Academy where he served as dean of students.
Services for Givens will be Saturday, Nov. 19, noon to 2 p.m. at Christ Temple Apostolic Faith Assembly, 430 W. Fall Creek Parkway.
