Roncalli scored back-to-back Marion County Softball Championships Monday with a 7-1 win against Franklin Central at Ben Davis.
The Royals 14-hit attack backed pitcher Keagan Rothrock who struck out 16 flashes. FC scored its lone run in the seventh inning.
Defending champion Roncalli handled Lutheran 11-1 in five innings Friday at home, and then shut out Southport 11-0, also in five innings, and North Central 10-0 in six innings Saturday at Ben Davis.
Once the hits began for Franklin Central in the county tourney, they kept coming in a 9-8 opening night Friday at Beech Grove, and then Saturday dumped Lawrence North, 11-1 with 10 hits in six innings in the quarterfinal round, and 26-2 with 23 hits in the semifinal against undermanned Brebeuf at Ben Davis.
Explaining the three-game barrage, sophomore Jadyn Tinsley said, “Once one (player) starts hitting, we all start hitting.”
Junior Jenna Thompson remarked, “We rally behind each other; we come together and start getting hits.”
Although the Flashes escaped at Beech Grove with a one-run win, FC was ahead 9-6 going into the bottom of the seventh before stopping a Hornets rally that fell short. FC scored eight runs in the last three innings.
FC soph Audrina Yorn led the attack with three hits and scored two runs; Kasey Hinkle, Sarah Miller, and Adelaide Hubbard had two hits apiece against BG. Aubree Bailey and Carmen Amaiston each had two hits for the Hornets.
Against Lawrence North, Flashes leadoff hitter Miller reached first on an infield error and scored on Tinsley’s triple before a six-run second inning broke the game open. Tinsley wound up with three RBI, Thompson had three hits and two RBI, and Miller scored three runs.
FC junior pitcher Mallory Stinson allowed only one run on three hits and struck out five Wildcats.
Against Brebeuf, the Flashes erupted for seven runs in the first with 10 trips to the plate, 10 runs in the second with 14 trips, and nine runs in the third again with 14 trips. One dozen Flashes had hits as Kaylie Grayson, August Coons, and Kaylin Cook each had three hits. Coons drove in four runs in two trips to the plate in the second inning. Tinsley and Abigail Kirstein each drove in three runs.
FC freshman pitcher Kiley Renick had a no-hitter for four innings, gave up one run on two hits and struck out nine Braves.
“Kiley did a great job,” FC coach Kathy Stricker said. “We’re playing good softball; we’re getting better and better as the season goes on.”
Roncalli’s Royals wasted little time getting to the championship game, winning two games in five innings and one game in six.
Keagan Rothrock struck out 11 Lutheran batters. Lyla Blackwell led at the plate with a double and triple and four RBI. Emma Fagan and Lauren Marsicek each slammed home runs. Natalie Summers racked up three hits.
Against Southport, the Royals exploded for six runs in the first inning to advance. Lyla Blackwell had three hits and Anna Marie Meek drove in three runs.
Roncalli capped its run to the championship game by ending North Central’s tourney run.
Decatur Central defeated visiting Ben Davis 5-4 Friday, but dropped a heartbreaker to North Central by the same score Saturday at Ben Davis.
Southport edged Perry Meridian 9-7 Friday with a six-run fifth inning to advance to the quarterfinals, avenging an earlier season loss to the Falcons, 6-2. Molly Hodge slammed a three-run homer for the Cardinals.
Malia Breedlove, Nevaeh Pender, Marianna Martinez, Breanna Reed, and Ady Stansbury each had two hits for Southport.
Mary Stroud had three hits and Addison Berry drove in two runs in the Falcons 10-hit attack.
