Perry Meridian has lofty expectations and is looking for solid play from catcher Evan Persons, center fielder/pitcher Mitchell Garrity, pitcher Cory Hardcastle and pitcher/first baseman Dusty Baird, all seniors.
Perry Meridian (6-18) – Coach Phil Webster, who led Decatur Central to a state title, has a rising star in 6-7 pitcher Dusty Baird ... support will come from Cory Hardcastle, Bryce Garrity and Jesse Wainscott … Baird threw a no-hitter against Lutheran last year but lost 1-0 … Mitchell Garrity (.460) one of state’s best hitters … brother Bryce Garrity hit .320 … senior Evan Persons experienced behind the plate … infield features Joe Genier at first, Alex Morgan at second and Luke Arkins at short … Adam Taylor and Wainscott join Garrity in outfield … newcomer Elliott Overmyer and Caleb Arkins, recovered from injury, will help … coach John Carpenter sees team moving closer to .500 season … 4A Falcons make trip to Lutheran for double-header Saturday at 11 a.m.

Coach’s comments: “I’m very excited about the depth of our pitching. Baird had some bad luck last year because we didn’t score runs for him. If they throw strikes, we can make the plays behind them. Our pitching should be our strength. Our infield will be young so I will have to be patient with them. We have to hit the ball a whole lot better than we did last year and at the right time. We have challenged our kids to do that so we don’t leave ducks on the pond. It helps that the kids are good students of the game. I don’t see us scoring eight to 10 runs per game, so we have to find a way to outscore teams.”
