Southport brings some size to the basketball court with senior Armont’e Smith and junior Chaz Hines.
SOUTHPORT (4A, 6-16) – Youth movement still under way in Southport Fieldhouse … won six of last 10 ball games last year … four seniors graduated last year but younger Cardinals had plenty of playing time … started two sophomores and three freshmen late last year … should pay dividends soon … only seniors are 5-9 Malcolm Griffin and talented Armont’e Smith … 6-5 Chaz Hines, averaged 15 points in last nine games … Hines is the X-factor … soph point guard Brevin Jefferson, junior shooting guard Brian Miller hit nearly 40 percent of his 3s … tough Ryan Lezon started most of season … 6-4 junior Eddie Schott is a sharpshooter … Matt Allen and Matt Munoz up from JV … Cards physically stronger … have speed and some size … can spread floor on offense … rough weekend ahead, host Center Grove Friday and go to Ben Davis Saturday.

Coach’s comments: “With Paul (Scruggs) leaving (after 2015-16 season), it gave us a chance for a new start a year early. This year became last year, so we aren’t exactly starting over. These guys are all battle tested; we finished third in Conference Indiana in a down year, and we beat a good Terre Haute South team at the end of season. We showed some potential.

“We have a solid core of four guys. They should be ahead this season in terms of what they learned. Our focus was to get bigger and stronger for this season. This group is unselfish; they play for each other, and that can make up for deficiencies you may have. We took everybody’s best shot last year because of our success in previous years. No one takes Southport lightly, and that was a compliment to these kids. I like the team we have. We are making progress.”
