Marian women are 13-1 in conference

Marian’s Lady Knights avenged an early season loss to Indiana Wesleyan by defeating the host Wildcats 61-56 Feb. 1 with a strong fourth quarter.

Kellie Kirkhoff led the Knights in scoring with 17 points. Jessica Almeida and Candace Danz also scored in double figures.

The Knights (23-3, 13-1 Crossroads League) defeated Spring Arbor (Mich.) 86-59 Saturday for their 11th straight win. Jenna Sullivan, who is exuberant on the bench when not playing, scored 16 points and pulled down nine rebounds. Roncalli’s Kellie Kirkhoff scored 15.  

Coach Katie Geralds and her crew will host Grace at 7 p.m. today before traveling to Huntington Saturday.

The men’s team (12-14, 3-11) had a tough week, losing to Indiana Wesleyan 94-61 and Spring Arbor 88-77. Derek Hawthorne returned from an ankle injury to lead the team with 22 points in the loss to Spring Arbor; Perry Meridian graduate Curtis Green scored 18 points.

The Knights are on the road Feb. 11 against Huntington.

Almeida, Sullivan and Wes Stowers all surpassed the 1,000-point career scoring marks last week.

The University of Indianapolis’ ladies team had its five-game road winning streak snapped Feb. 2 by Truman State 71-61 despite Martha Burse’s career-high 31 points. Nicole Anderson scored 12 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the season.

The Greyhounds (14-9, 8-5 Great Lakes Valley Conference) also lost to Quincy (Ill.) 84-80 in overtime. Senior Nicole Anderson led the team with 20 points to became the 23rd player in UIndy women’s history to score 1,000 points.

Up next are home games against William Jewell (Mo.) at 5:30 p.m. Thursday and Rockhurst at 1 p.m. Saturday.

The men’s team (12-9, 9-4) split a pair of games last week, defeating Truman  (Mo.) 94-86 in a hard-fought battle before losing to Quincy 89-82.

Ajay Lawton and Eric Davidson each had 24 points in the first game, with Roncalli’s Jimmy King chipping in nine while dishing out eight assists. Davidson scored a team-high 22 against Quincy, and King had a fine all-around game with 18 points, nine rebounds, six steals and four assists.

This week’s home dates are against William Jewell at 7:45 p.m. Thursday and William Jewell at 3:15 p.m. Saturday.
