Marian basketball off to strong start; UIndy girls head to Puerto Rico for Thanskgiving

The college basketball season is underway, and I will again follow the men’s and women’s teams at the University of Indianapolis and Marian University.

Marian’s men are 8-1 after beating Asbury and IU Southeast 123-119 and 82-62, respectively, over the weekend. Junior Curtis Green, a graduate of Perry Meridian, scored 18 points against Asbury. The Knights entertain St. Francis at 7 p.m. Nov. 29.

The women’s squad, 6-1 after defeating Asbury 85-45, features junior Kellie Kirkhoff and freshman Rachel Titzer, both graduates of Roncalli. They are coached by Katie Gearlds, who played basketball at Beech Grove and Purdue and in the WNBA. This is her fourth year at the helm, and her team won the NAIA championship last year. She is assisted by Mark Parker, who used to coach the lady Hornets. The team will host Indiana University Northwest at 6 p.m. Saturday.

The UIndy men’s team is 1-3 after losing to Hillsdale 89-70. The Greyhounds are expecting some quality play from Roncalli graduate Jimmy King, a sophomore who saw action in 25 games as a freshman. Upcoming away games are Nov. 26 at Kentucky State, Dec. 1 at Wisconsin-Parkside and Dec. 3 at Lewis before returning home Dec. 10 to face Olivet Nazarene.

UIndy’s ladies are 3-1 after defeating Finley, Walsh and Tiffin and losing to No. 5 Ashland. Their next games are Nov. 25 and 26 in San Juan, Puerto Rico. They are coached by Kristin Drabyn, a native of Avon, who’s leading the ’Hounds for the first year.

I’m looking forward to seeing some of these teams’ home games.
