(5-5, 3A) Redskins coming off 5-5 season, ending string of 13 losing campaigns … looking for first winning season in many decades … third-year coach Robert Orkman has experienced team … 70 percent of offense and 80 percent of defense is back … backfield features third-year quarterback Coadie Barnett, 1,032 total yards, 14 TDs; third-year starter Deangelo Dean, a physical but electrifying running back, 802 total yards, five TDs; Lavalle Bynum, a running back who averaged 10 yards per carry last year; and veteran receiver Owen McGaughey … up front, experienced line includes third-year Kevin Reaves, Jaylen Douglas, William Hickman and Jaylen Battle … defense not big but quick … Marshall transfer/underrated end Rickey Belt bolsters defense with Bynum (79 tackles), James Brewer, Isaiah Starks, Bynum and Jose Bravo (62 tackles)  … D-backs are Dean (24 tackles), Keyshawn Range, Fred Peterson, soph Tyron Sanders … in new sectional with powers Ritter and Chatard … open with two road games, first home date Sept. 1 against Washington.

Coach’s comments: “We are looking to build on last season’s 5-5 record. We had the best summer since I’ve been here. The kids are very excited and they are ready to go. They have bought into everything we have wanted them to for the past two years. A lot of these kids are in the program for the third year.

“I believe we have one of the best 3A offensive backfields in the area. We are 26 strong but I hope we have some games where our younger players can get valuable playing time. These kids from different areas of the city have bonded together. We are definitely more of a family now. These kids hold each other accountable. They also understand the rich tradition of Manual football and how prideful the alumni are for Manual.”
