Unranked Lutheran wrestler Hayden Filopovich continues to march through IHSAA post-season competition. Competing in the 182-pound class, the Saints standout defeated Warren Central’s James Dycus, 5-1, Saturday at Perry Meridian and became the first-ever Lutheran wrestler to claim a regional title.
At Perry Meridian, the history-making Saint defeated Warren Central senior James Dycus, 3-1, for the second time in the IHSAA playoffs. Earlier Filopovich pinned Simeon Knox of Providence Cristo Rey and Perry Meridian junior Tyler Goodall.
In the Warren Central sectional, the determined sophomore pinned New Palestine’s Colin Faubion and Triton Central’s Matt Guhl before capturing the school’s first-ever sectional title by defeating Dycus. Filopovich (30-1) will be joined at the New Castle semistate by teammates Dante Akins and Logan Beard who won their firstround matches at Perry Meridian; the first time in Lutheran history that three wrestlers will compete. Filopovich is among 10 champions from Southside high schools who advanced to the New Castle semistate.
Again, he will be an underdog in a field that features Indiana Mat 1-2 stateranked seniors Jalen Morgan of Elwood and Cameron Bacon of Carmel. No. 1-ranked undefeated wrestlers, sophomore Alex Cottey, 106 pounds, of Perry Meridian and Center Grove junior Payton Littell also took regional blue ribbons Saturday. Cottey (37-0) defeated No. 7 Carlton Perry of Warren Central, 3-1, at Perry Meridian.
Littell (39-0) needed only one point to shutout No. 8 Kyser Montgomery of Brownsburg at Mooresville. Roncalli junior Brayden Lowery, 126 pounds, is 38-0 after defeating Warren Central’s Christopher Stewart, 5-2, at Perry Meridian. Teammate and state champion as a freshman in 2017, No. 2 Alex Viduya dominated Warren Central’s Aundre Beatty, 11-3, in the 132-pound finale.
Southside wrestlers won 13 regional championships who are among 32 qualifiers to advance to semistates. Wrestlers from Perry Meridian, Roncalli, Lutheran, Southport and Franklin Central are among the wrestlers Saturday at New Castle, while Center Grove and Greenwood grapplers are in a strong field at Evansville Reitz. Competition begins at 9 a.m.
The top four wrestlers advance to the IHSAA State Finals in Bankers Life Fieldhouse, Feb. 15-16.
