Lutheran (18-8) – Unexpected playoff run with young team to Jasper semistate … graduated only three seniors but saw three sophs move away … veteran coach Dick Alter retooling lineup with some first-time senior players and JV grads … Saints return with senior infielder/catcher Carson Thomas and juniors, catcher/pitcher Noah Wood (.382) and pitcher/infielder Matthew Alter (.294, 3-1, 3.74 ERA) … juniors Jarod Snead, Matt Holm and Brett Reid step into different positions … up from JV, junior infielder and soph first baseman Jonas Akers … outfielder Austin Bryant returns, joined by first-time senior outfielders Trevor Russell and Max Wirick … Saints travel Thursday to Greenwood Christian Academy.
Coach’s comments: “We have a strong nucleus. We have had more practices outside because of the artificial turf on the football field. Three of the freshmen who have moved away also were pitchers, so depth will be a challenge. We will have a whole new infield. Our season depends on how well some of our kids who have not played varsity baseball perform. The newcomers will man the outfield. We have enough to be competitive, but the question is: How many games can we win? We always try to develop a team that is ready to compete when sectionals begin.
