Lutheran emerged as the only Southside team to capture a girls basketball sectional championship when defeating host Morristown 54-51 Saturday in overtime.
The title was the Saints’ first title since 2006 and fourth overall. Coach Joe Morgan’s defensive-minded team faces Class A No. 7 Tindley (19-6) at noon Saturday in the Southwestern (Shelby County) Regional.
Tied at halftime, Lutheran led 35-25 heading into the fourth quarter, but Morristown came back to knot it at 41 at the end of regulation.
Depth was no problem as the Saints utilized only six players against the Yellow Jackets.
Sophomore Rylee Morris scored 17 points, snared six rebounds and came up with eight steals. Junior Erin Pasch added 15 points and seven rebounds. Sophomore Darianne Snyder chipped in 11 points, including a pair of treys, and had three assists. Junior Stormy Bonds had six points.
Lone senior Kimmie Kuehr had five points. Mariah Mielke came off the bench.
Lutheran (13-11) defeated Arlington 49-32 and Central Christian 59-56 to reach the title game.
The Lutheran-Tindley winner faces the opening game Bloomfield vs. Jac-Cen-Del winner in the title game at 8 p.m.
