For the first time in nearly 30 years the Beech Grove football team is on a five-game winning streak. But win No. 5 didn’t come easy.
Trailing Monrovia 36-18 late in the third quarter, Beech Grove fought back and quarterback Chase Andries scored the game-winning touchdown on an 11-yard run with under a minute to go. The Hornets (5-1) racked up 579 yards of offense with a balance attack of 278 rushing and 301 passing in their 48-44 win.
Beech Grove’s only loss was a 36-28 setback to Lutheran in the season opener for both teams. Since then the Hornets have outscored their opponents 262-157.
Southport remains undefeated at 6-0 as it won at Franklin Central 26-20. The Flashes (1-5) had a surprising 20-13 halftime lead, but a blocked punt resulted in a game-winning touchdown for the Cardinals.
Roncalli held on to defeat Brebeuf 21-17 to move to 4-2. The Rebels had a 21-10 lead in the third quarter and were in danger of falling behind late in the fourth as they nursed a 21-17 edge.
Roncalli defensive back Caleb Bowling intercepted a deep pass on Brebeuf’s final drive to secure the game. The Rebels forced five turnovers as the defense kept the Braves to just 91 yards in the first half.
Perry Meridian’s homecoming game was spoiled by Bloomington North 29-13. The Falcons fell to 2-4.
Center Grove evened its record at 3-3 after defeating Lawrence Central 49-31. The Trojans have outscored their past two foes 106-31.
Lutheran (4-2) continues its solid season as it handled Scecina 35-7 on the road. The Saints’ losses have come by a total of four points.
Greenwood (4-2) had its three-game winning streak snapped at Guerin Catholic 42-21.
Manual fell to 0-6 after losing to Howe 56-0.
