After lifting weights, Greenwood senior linebackers/defensive backs took time for a photo: Danny Smalls, Logan Roddy, Justin VanDyke, Tim Johns and Noah Compton.
(8-4, 4A) Reached sectional title game two straight years against powerhouse Roncalli … first back-to-back winning seasons since 2011-12 … tied for second in Mid-State … coach Mike Campbell in 12th year at helm … Woodmen look lean and mean … return with one of area’s top quarterback-halfback duos in senior signal-caller Seth Gallman, 1,276 yards passing, 12 TDS, and running back Brandon Rosado, a jokester who is all business on the field, 1,279 yards rushing, 14 TDs … Gallman also can throw to variety of receivers: Isaiah Drew, 15.2 yards per reception, four TDs; 6-5 Conner Battinau, 13.8 yards, two TDs; Justin VanDyke, 11.8 yards; or RJ Magness … D-line includes buffed 6-6 Ethan McClain (260), Andy Pollert (245), Cameron Bridges, Joey Craig (240), Jake Patton (233) and Nick Young (225) … five seniors back up line – linebackers VanDyke, Danny Smalls, Logan Roddy, 6-3 Army commit Tim Johns (230), Noah Compton and safety Van Dyke … open Friday at Perry Meridian, first of three straight games on road … first home date Sept. 8 against Mooresville.

Coach’s comments: “I really like the leadership of this team; I think that will help us as the season goes on and we get into the playoffs. This is as good a group as I’ve ever had working hard in the weight room and it shows. They are very coachable too.

“Our backs have a lot of experience and have been together. These seniors have been together for a long time. We play one 6A team and five 5A teams. I think our strength of schedule will help us in the playoffs. I expect us to be in the thick of things in the Mid-State again.”
