Greenwood sophomore Allie Dalton won the Carmel cross-country semistate championship Saturday at the Northview Church course.
Dalton, who was fifth at last year’s semistate and 10th at the state meet, covered the 5K distance in 18 minutes, 18.9 seconds and finished 14.2 seconds ahead of Avon sophomore Taylor Nicholson. Dalton is the only Southside female runner to advance to Saturday’s state finals on the Lavern Gibson course in Terre Haute. The girls run at 1 p.m., the boys at 1:45 p.m.; admission is $8.
Franklin Central’s girls team finished eighth and was led by junior Brooke Talhelm (19:56.3) in 41st place. Southport was 19th behind sophomore Heather Blankenbaker in 122nd place (21:48.1). Roncalli was 20th, paced by freshman Kate Morse (21:17.6.)
Carmel, Avon, Warren Central, Zionsville, Cathedral and Hamilton Southeastern advanced to the state finals.
Perry Meridian junior John Tansy (16:00.7) and Center Grove senior Griffin Miller (16:05.3) finished seventh and 11th, respectively, to qualify for the state. The Trojans finished 13th among 20 teams.
Franklin Central was eighth and paced by senior Kyle O’Malley, 24th (16:26.9), and junior Robbie Lawson, 35th (16:38.8).
Roncalli, paced by Nathan Schoettle, 89th (17:26.6), was 15th.
Beech Grove junior Vila Vuskalns (17:14.0) was 69th.

Center Grove’s boys soccer team reached the championship match of the Evansville Harrison Semistate on Saturday.
The Trojans defeated Bloomington South 1-0 but fell to Brebeuf Jesuit in the championship match 4-3 after being tied at 1 in the first period.
The girls team lost to eventual champion Carmel 1-0 in the semifinals.
