Coach’s comments: “These kids have taken a step forward each year with winning the conference and a sectional. This is our first group of four-year all-baseball players. Most of our top players are back. We have four solid pitchers and each one has different skills. They should be able to keep hitters off balance. We lost some power but we have plenty of guys who can hit the ball hard. Our team speed is better this year. We are preparing to take that next step.”
Greenwood Christian Academy (16-11) – Won first 1A sectional trophy last year in only fourth season … bowed from playoffs in regional championship … hit impressive .328 as a team … coach Doug Hagist graduated top hitters Alec Brown (.494, 41 hits, 42 RBI) and Jacob Hagist (.341) … may not miss a beat at the plate … senior Sparks (4-2, 1.18 ERA) headlines mound staff with classmate and Bryce Walters (1-2), soph Joel Stinnett (2-1, 2.69 ERA) and junior Nolan Check … they can hit, too: Check (.362), Sparks (.347), senior center fielder Nate Weems (.333) and sophomore shortstop Joel Stinnet (.319) … Noble Pearcy is at second and Josh Lovins in the outfield … first baseman Ray Haltom, catcher/infielder Colton Crick and second baseman Griffin Huizinga add speed to line-up … Cougars visit rival Lutheran at 5 p.m. Thursday and then are hosts to Monrovia in a double-header Saturday at 11 a.m.
