Center Grove’s state-ranked boys and girls teams are favored to capture IHSAA soccer sectional championships Saturday.
But first, each Trojans team will have to advance through 3A boys playoffs at Franklin and girls competition on their home field.
In boys play, the No. 6 Trojans met host Franklin in the nightcap Tuesday after Whiteland and Perry Meridian collided in the opener.
In the Franklin sectional opener Monday, Southport blanked Roncalli, 2-0 and will meet Greenwood at 5 p.m. Wednesday. The second match Tuesday pits the Whiteland-Perry Meridian and Center Grove-Franklin winners against each other.
In 3A action Monday at Warren Central, Franklin Central came from behind to defeat Tech, 3-2 and face Cathedral today at 5 p.m. Trailing 2-0 at the half, the Flashes recovered on goals by junior Chris Faulds, senior Bamlak Reidenbach and the winning goal by Faulds with five minutes left in the match.
Beech Grove and 2A sectional host Chatard collide today a 5:30 p.m., followed by the Manual and Washington match. The winners square off Saturday at 2 p.m.
Sectional host 1A No. 14 Lutheran trounced Tindley, 14-0, Monday. The Saints meet Providence Cristo Rey today at 5 p.m., for the right to contend for the title Saturday at 2 p.m.
In the 1A sectional at Southwestern (Shelby County), No. 12 Greenwood Christian Academy shut out Morristown, 4-0 Monday. Luke Walters scored two goals with Sam Graves and Josue Mier also scored. Goaltender Gabe Vessely, who had 14 saves in the season finale against Lutheran, had his second straight shutout.
The Cougars (11-6) are headed for a semifinal showdown against No. 6 Oldenburg Academy (10-2-4) today at 7 p.m. The winner meets the Southwest-Hauser winner at 2 p.m. Saturday for the sectional trophy.
Girls sectionals
In the 3A playoffs Tuesday at Center Grove, the No. 7 Trojans met Greenwood and Whiteland challenged Columbus North with the winners meeting Thursday at 5 p.m.
At Lawrence Central, four Southside teams challenge for the sectional trophy.
Franklin Central dominated Perry Meridian, 7-0, Monday in the sectional opener and will face rival Roncalli at 5:30 p.m. Thursday. In late August, the Flashes downed Roncalli, 3-0.
Southport met host Warren Central Tuesday after the hosts opened against rival Lawrence Central.
Beech Grove traveled to the 2A Greensburg sectional Tuesday and faced Batesville; the winner would play again Thursday at 5 p.m.
In the 1A sectional at Triton Central, Greenwood Christian went into its match against No. 8 Heritage Christian Tuesday. The Cougars brought a six-game winning streak into the playoffs after being led throughout the season by senior captain Cameron Northern who has scored more than 100 goals during her schoolgirl career. The Cougars went into the playoffs with their best-ever season record of 11-4-1.
Lutheran also faced a formidable foe Tuesday against No. 3 Park Tudor.
The two upset-minded Southside teams were hopeful of winning and meeting each other Thursday at 5 p.m. in a semifinal match.
Volleyball
No. 5 Center Grove and No. 25 Roncalli warmed up for the upcoming volleyball playoffs by capturing county tourney championship trophies.
Center Grove (20-4) dominated rival Franklin (25-5, 25-7, 25-18) for the Johnson County crown Thursday at Edinburgh. The Trojans are at full strength with the return of Madison Hammill (emergency appendectomy) and Calista Stafford (knee). CG also swept Whiteland to reach the title match. Hammill racked up 37 assists in the two matches.
Center Grove is in the nightcap of the opening night Tuesday of the 4A sectional by facing neighboring Greenwood at 7 p.m. Franklin Central meets Shelbyville in the opener at 6 p.m. Also, in 4A competition, sectional host Southport meets Ben Davis at 7 p.m., Tuesday.
Sectional competition opens for all Southside teams Thursday, Oct. 17.
Boys tennis
Three Southside boys’ tennis sectional championship teams were in action Tuesday. In the Center Grove regional, the host Trojans met Shelbyville and Franklin Central faced off against Southport. The winners meet today at 4:30 p.m. The regional champion advances to the Center Grove semistate Saturday at noon.
