(SUBMITTED PHOTO) Franklin Central High School’s Malachi Quarles, IHSAA state champion in 100- and 300-meter hurdles, receives the Robert S. Hinshaw Mental Attitude Award in boys track and field Friday at the IHSAA boys’ state finals at Indiana University in Bloomington. Quarles is with parents Ricky and Nancy Quarles and an unidentified presenter. The IHSAA Executive Committee, on behalf of Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, presented a $1,000 scholarship to FCHS in Quarles’ name. This season, the Flashes’ senior also was a double champion in conference, sectional and regional meets. AT FCHS, he served as president of the Class of 2019, speech team and Black Student Union. Quarles also received the Cougil Award as the outstanding senior athlete at FCHS, the BlakeStrong Scholarship, FCHS English Department award for public speaking and the William Clarke Award for Social Studies. He plans to attend Georgetown University in the fall and study Government and African American Studies.
