Franklin Central won two relays and the 800-meter run to finish fourth in the Marion County girls track meet last week at North Central.
The Flashes opened the competition by winning the 4-by-800-meter relay in 9 minutes, 54.05 seconds with Emily Welch and Cailyn Adams, Laine Jackson and Lexi McCann. Roncalli was fourth, 10:11.44.
The Flashes won the 4-by-400 relay with Brooke Talhelm, Olivia Koehl, Laine Jackson and Kaitlyn Kendall in 4:6.39, 4.6 seconds ahead of Warren Central.
Southside runners dominated the 800 run with four of the top five finishers. Talhelm (2:19.87) and teammate Haley Welch (2:21.76) finished first and second, respectively, in the two-lap chase. Southport’s Erin Sullivan (2:22.99) was third, and Leah Biasi of Roncalli (2:24.89) was fourth.
Perry Meridian’s Kieran Casey brought home the 1,600-meter championship by covering the distance in 5:15.45 seconds, 5.27 seconds in front of Erika Chelales of North Central. Casey was third in a close finish in the 3,200 run with a time of 11:36.28. The top three runners were within 3.14 seconds of one another.
Lawrence Central won the meet with 115 points; FC totaled 54, with Roncalli seventh, 37; Perry Meridian ninth, 26; points; Southport 11th, 15; and Beech Grove 15th, three.
Among the top finishes from Southside schools:
• Beech Grove – Lorece Johnson, eighth, pole vault, 8 feet.
• Franklin Central – Allyson Robertson, fourth, pole vault, 10 feet, 3 inches.
• Perry Meridian – Ari Newhouse, third, 400, 59.34; Daiva Wilson, sixth, shot put, 34 feet, 11.5 inches.
• Roncalli – Paige Saylor, second, long jump, 17 feet, 8.75 inches; Annie Richardson, fifth, pole vault, 9 feet; Ashley Kedra, sixth, discus, 103 feet, 6 inches; 4-by-800 relay, fourth, 10:12.43, Jenni Biasi, Emily Barron, Kenzie Quinn, Kristen Reece.
• Southport – Molly Bridges, fifth, shot put, 36 feet, 8.5 inches.
Southport finishes seventh in boys meet
Roncalli’s Conner James captured the discus championship with a throw of 142 feet, 4 inches in rain-delayed field events at North Central.
The only Southside champion, James won by 2 feet, 7 inches over Justin Brandon of Ben Davis.
Southport’s Clayton Bowie was a close second in the 800- and 1,600-meter events. In a tight finish in the 1,600, which was decided by one-half of a second, Bowie (4:19.27) was beaten by Lawrence North’s Joe Murphy. Isaiah White of Perry Meridian was fifth (4:33.84).
Bowie (2:04.51) missed first place in the 800 by 1.09 seconds to T.J. Jerger of Lawrence North. White was sixth (2:05.53), with FC’s Andrew Schmalfeldt finishing seventh (2:07.6).
Franklin Central’s 4-by-800 relay team of Schmalfeldt, Evan Shuck, Robbie Talhelm and Kyle O’Malley (8:02.77) was second to Brebeuf Jesuit, losing by thirty-one hundreths of a second. The Flashes’ 4-by-400 relay of Talhelm, Robert Ritter, Aaron Austin and Carter Kellum finished third (3:43.80).
Southport, 39 points, was seventh in points among the 14-team field, with Franklin Central eighth, Perry Meridian ninth (tied with Park Tudor), Roncalli 11th and Beech Grove 14th.
In hurdles, Southport’s Cooper Davis, 16.13 seconds, was fifth in the 110, and Roncalli’s Nat Otley, 44.42 seconds, was fifth in the 300.
The Cardinals’ Charlie Stroub was third in high jump, 5 feet, 10 inches; Beech Grove’s Allen Mayer, sixth, pole vault, 11-0; and Southport’s Julius Shirley, long jump, 21-05.
