The men’s and women’s basketball teams from UIndy and Marian are closing out their regular seasons and beginning their conference tournaments.
UIndy’s men’s team (15-10, 12-5 Great Lakes Valley Conference) split a pair of home games last week, defeating Lewis (Ill.) 81-69 behind a solid effort from Roncalli’s Jimmy King, who scored 16 points and had five rebounds, seven assists and two steals. The Greyhounds lost to Wisconsin-Parkside 92-84 despite King’s career-high 22 points. He also dished out nine assists and had seven rebounds and two steals.
The Greyhounds close out their regular season with a road game against St. Joseph’s on Thursday. The tournament begins Sunday, but it’s unknown when and where UIndy will play.
The lady Greyhounds (15-12, 9-8) played the same teams, downing Lewis 59-55 – the first time to do so in five years – behind the 17 points of Martha Burse. They lost to Wisconsin-Parkside 66-62; senior Nicole Anderson had a team-high 27 points. Their final regular-season game is a road date against St. Joseph’s on Thursday.
Both teams begin tournament play Sunday, but it’s unknown when and where they will play. Both games will be aired WICR-FM 88.7.
Marian’s men’s team (14-16, 5-13 Crossroads League) also split a couple of games, losing to Bethel 104-72, in which Perry Meridian graduate Curtis Green scored a team-high 17 points. The team closed out its regular season by downing Goshen 78-74 behind the 28 points of Wesley Stowers. Green and Derek Hawthorne added 16 and 12, respectively.
The Knights will have a new coach next year as Carmel’s Scott Heady has been named to take over the team. Heady led Carmel to the 4A state championships in 2012 and ’13.
The Lady Knights (27-3, 17-1), coached by Katie Gearlds, won both of their contests last week. They edged Bethel 67-63 and trounced Goshen 86-51. Roncalli graduate Kellie Kirkhoff tallied 23 points in both outings to lead all scorers.
Marian is hosting the conference tourney, which started Tuesday and ends Monday.
