Perry Meridian has five returning players: second baseman Alex Morgan and outfielder Adam Taylor, both juniors, senior third baseman Bryce Garrity and juniors in pitcher Jesse Wainscott and utility player Joe Genier.
PERRY MERIDIAN (9-14-1): Coach John Carpenter’s top priority is to score more runs … Falcons averaged 12 runners left on base per game last year … must find way to replace big bat of graduated Mitchell Garrity, Dayton (.507, 34 hits, 16 RBIs, 25 stolen bases) … brother/senior Bryce Garrity, 14 hits, top returning hitter and No. 2 pitcher … all Falcons working on getting hits … outfield consists of juniors Adam Taylor (16 runs), Eastern Illinois commit Jesse Wainscott and junior Dacoda Hernandez … middle infield returns with juniors Luke Arkins at short and Alex Morgan at second for solid defense … Junior Joe Genier shows promise at first … soph third baseman Kayden Reed can help with more hits … Wainscott (2-5, 2.05 ERA) leads mound corps … more pitching help comes from senior Holden Palmer, Reed and freshman Bailey Arnold … Falcons open against Columbus East at Holder Field, at noon, Saturday and Columbus East April 5.

Coach’s comments: “We were not efficient offensively last year, although we had a better team batting average than the year before. We lost about eight games by one or two runs. We didn’t do a good job of getting timely hits. We expect our juniors and seniors to come through and become the right hitter in the right place. We are trying to pick up more speed on the bases, but we also need to know the right time to swipe a base. We expect to be very good defensively again. Obviously with the new IHSAA rule we’re looking to develop more pitchers so we have some depth. We’re going to be competitive this year. We’re older, more intelligent and more athletic.”
