Center Grove’s boys golf team and Perry Meridian’s Nick Ostenburg are playing their final rounds of the 36-hole state tournament today at the Legends Golf Club in Franklin (Tuesday’s results were unavailable at press time).
Playing in last week’s Providence Regional at Henryville’s Champions Pointe Golf Course, which was co-designed by Hoosier golfer Fuzzy Zoeller, Ostenburg led after nine with a 2-under 34. The Southport Sectional medalist had two birdies and parred seven holes on the front nine.
The back nine proved troublesome as he shot a 2-over 38 for a 72, while Columbus North’s Christian Fairbanks, who trailed by two strokes after nine holes, fired an impressive 3-under 33 on the back nine for a 69 and medalist honors on the par-72 course.
Center Grove’s Christian Heck (35-36 – 71) led the Trojans to second place and a state finals team berth. They finished three strokes behind champion Columbus North. The team’s other members are Austin Crowder, who shot a 76, Zach Carrabine (77), Hayden Martin (77)and Wes Kendall (83). Crowder fired a 35 on the front nine but on the back nine as he posted a 5-over 41.
The top three teams advanced, as did the top six golfers who did not qualify as part of a team.
Perry Meridian was seventh with a 316, and Roncalli, led by David Doyle’s 80, was 12th, 328.
Franklin Central’s Brady Vaughan shot an 86.
