Center Grove swimmer Emily Saugstad reached the podium (top eight finishers) three times in the state
swimming and diving finals at the Indiana University Natatorium in Indianapolis,where the Trojans finished
ninth. Carmel dominated the meet for its 29th consecutive championship.
Saugstad was sixth in the 100-yard freestyle in 51.08 seconds and seventh in the 200-freestyle, 1:49.14. She made her third trip to the podium with teammates Peighton Gilbert, Amanda Ward and Caroline Sheehan as members of the fifth-place 200-yard freestyle relay, 1:36.19. The relay team trailed Hamilton Southeastern by only eighty-hundredths of a second.
Sheehan was eighth in the 500-freestyle but was in a close four-way battle for fifth place. She reached the B final in the 200-yard individual medley and was seventh, 2:06.18, 15th overall.
The Trojans’ 400 freestyle relay was first in the B final, ninth overall, 3:29.51, with Sheehan, Gilbert, Ward and Saugstad. The 200 medley relay did not advance from the preliminaries.
Center Grove diver Rachel Smallwood was eighth with 409.15 points, slipping from third after the semifinal round. Greenwood’s Krista Jones was 10th with 399.95 points.
Franklin Central’s Jamie Leming competed in the 100 backstroke and Greenwood’s Lauren Dalton in the 100 breaststroke but did not make it out of Friday’s prelims.
