Coach’s comments: “We don’t have many players back. Seniors to provide the leadership, but we will be leaning heavily on juniors. The players know what to expect, we’re going over the finer things of the game because they know how to compete. They understand there are high expectations; that’s nothing new to them. It’s just a matter of getting everyone on the same page. We’re definitely talented. We need more depth on the mound. I’m sure we’ll win some games we shouldn’t win and lose some that we shouldn’t lose. As long as we’re playing well at the end of year, that’s all that matters. It will be an interesting and fun year.”
CENTER GROVE (24-4): Needed one more win last year to reach 4A state championship game … captured the Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference, sectional and regional titles … coach Keith Hatfield’s most inexperienced team … returning players are few: senior Nick Coy, who started every game last year behind the plate, plus junior infielders Ryan Sauter at first and Michael Wyman at third … returning pitchers are southpaw Jacob Gilcrest (4-1), relief pitcher Max Heath and Chris Foote … must find pitching depth … entire outfield will be new … Hatfield was still sorting out newcomers Monday before scheduled scrimmage game against Shenandoah … tough MIC and 4A non-conference slate as always.
