The boys golf state finals last week brought the curtain down on the 2013-14 high school sports year.
Center Grove’s Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference and Southport Sectional championship team finished sixth in the 36-hole tournament at The Legends Golf Club in Franklin.

With one senior and three juniors shooting the team’s lowest individual scores, the Trojans fired a 612, 21 strokes behind champion Columbus North.

Senior Wes Kendall completed shot a 77-76 – 153, third among the Trojans golfers. Four juniors, including Hayden Martin, competed in the state finals June 17 and 18 and are expected to return next season.
Finishing sixth in the medalist chase, junior Chris Heck fired CG’s best score with a 73-73 – 146, only 2 over par for the tourney. Heck had difficulty on the second day with three straight bogeys on the first three holes but had an impressive four birdies on the back nine.

Junior Austin Crowder tied for 23rd place with a 78-74 – 152. He recorded two double bogeys, one bogey and one par on the first four holes of the opening round and finished with a 5-over 41 on the front nine but was solid over the remaining 27 holes.

Junior Zack Carrabine tied for 72nd with an 82-81 – 163. He had two birdies on the first five holes on opening day.

Martin was just one stroke behind Carrabine and fired an 85-79 – 164, which did not figure into the team’s tally. Martin had three birdies each day on the back nine.

The Trojans were seventh, 11 shots off the lead pace, after the first 18 holes in the 15-team field.
The No. 7 state-ranked Trojans reached the state finals by finishing second in the Providence Regional on June 13 at Champions Pointe Golf Course in Henryville.

Columbus North’s Christian Fairbanks and Michael VanDeventer tied for medalist honors with 141 strokes each.
