Southport moved to 3-2 overall and 3-0 in Conference Indiana by defeating Bloomington South, setting up a showdown of league unbeatens Friday at Cardinal Stadium, where Southport hosts Franklin Central (4-1) at 7 p.m.
Trailing 28-21 late in the fourth quarter Friday to Bloomington South with just a little over four minutes remaining, Southport powered its way down the field, capping the drive with a 7-yard touchdown pass from Eddie Schott to Ryan Lezon setting up an extra point to tie the game.
However, much to the surprise of everyone, the coaching staff, led by Brandon Winters, opted for a two-point conversion try to win it.
The play, sometimes called Oregon Gold, worked to perfection. On an end around, Lezon found Schott in the end zone and the Cardinals pulled off the 29-28 upset.
Asked how many times the team practices that play, Winters said, “Every day for the past three years.”
Priceless.
