Cards hosting homecoming

Southport High School’s Student Booster Club will present its annual homecoming parade at 5:30 p.m. Friday. The procession will be followed by the Southport-Franklin Central football game.

This year’s homecoming theme is “This Is Southport,” a tribute to the school’s athletic traditions.

Serving as grand marshal is Kevin Freeman, who has been with WFMS-FM for 25 years. He is known for his contagious giggle and quick wit on the “The Jim, Deb & Kevin Show,” which airs weekdays from 5-10 a.m.

Freeman reports that it’s tough to single out one special moment during his 34-year career, but broadcasting from New York City on the first anniversary of Sept. 11, 2001, has to be one of them. Letting the survivors tell their stories was compelling radio, and Freeman said he was honored to be the vehicle to make it happen.

He and his colleagues have interviewed and met just about everybody in country music over the past two decades. He has twice been named Broadcast Personality of the Year by the Country Music Association and once by the Academy of Country Music.

Freeman is married to his high school sweetheart, Andrea. They have three married daughters and four grandchildren.
