Beech Grove (4-16) – Hornets won only four games with young team last year … left 150 runners on base, scored only 77 runs … coach Lois Speziale believes experience counts, returns with six seniors among nine returnees … returning soph pitcher Lexi Ham (3-11), overworked last year, has some relief with freshman Caley Johnson behind her … leadoff senior lefty slapper Reecie Gilliam (.476, 30 hits, 21 stolen bases) can get on base ... senior Mallory Storms (.333, 22 hits, team-high 13 RBIs) fits anywhere in line-up … freshmen Tia O’Connor and Quinn Johnson have strong bats … most experienced returnees are junior Taylor Harmon and sophs Abigail Keown and Haven Price … seniors include infielders Bailey Cash, Sam Redman and Kayleh Johnson plus utility player Andrea Stevens, who last played as a sophomore … first home game April 4 against Southport.
Coach’s comments: “We have an older group of players this year. A lot of the seniors Reecie and Mallory are returning. I’m looking to them to be good leaders on the field and teach the underclassmen. I’m excited about the freshmen with us; they are solid athletes but need to improve their game knowledge. We lost a lot of close games last year, so I want our hitting to be more consistent. Our hitting is great; it just doesn’t come in bunches. The four freshmen on varsity play a highly competitive level of club ball. We aren’t super-experienced. We need to put a lot of pieces together.
