Joe owned Sheet Metal Models, Inc. and was a highly regarded basketball referee working his way all the way in to the Big 10. As a Beech Grove graduate, he stayed active with the school and athletics supporting the community in any way he could. He was a member of the former Woodside Methodist Church and the Beech Grove Masonic Lodge #694 for over 50 years. He served as Grand Master and was a member of the Murat Shriners.
Joe is survived by his son, Tony Gilliland (Jennifer); significant other, Red Anderson; grandchildren, Courtney Hack (Brendan) and Claire Gilliland; great grandchildren, Harper Anne Hack and Elsie ChandlerHack; and sisters, Patty Abbott (Carl) and Susie Emberton.
Visitation and his funeral were held Thursday and Friday at Little and Sons Funeral Home, Beech Grove. Burial followed in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens, Greenwood.
Her early life was shaped by the aftermath of World War II. She learned to prize frugality and placed a premium on education. She was an occupational therapist, teacher and preschool coordinator in Perry Township’s Rise Learning Center.
She worked with the Kiwanis Club, Ronald McDonald House, Salvation Army, and other activities associated with the Acton United Methodist Church.
G.H. Herrmann Madison Avenue Funeral Home managed a private burial with family. A Memorial will be at Acton United Methodist Church July 7 at 1 p.m., service at 2 p.m.
HOWARD J. CATT, 98, widower of Beverly and Janet; children, Nancy (Rick) Wright, Debbie (Jay) Danner, Brenda (Ralph) Reiff, Brian (Donna) Catt, Barbara Maas Smith, Robert (Barbie) Maas; sister, Mary Jane (Larry) Estelle; 15 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren.
Howard proudly served his country during WWII in the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps.
Howard was the city and IHSAA basketball tournament director for the Hinkle sectional, regional, and semi-state.
He will be remembered for always praising, encouraging, and being a “straight shooter”.
Visitation is Thursday, July 6, 2023 from 4-8 p.m. at Shirley Brothers Thompson Road Chapel and Friday from 10-11 a.m.
WENDELL E. DAVIS, 94, wife, Loueva Davis; children, Wendell Boardman-Davis, Bridgett Davis; three grandchildren.
He began a long career in the moving and storage industry as a driver for the American Red Ball Transit Company in 1954. Afterward, he spent time as an Agency Recruiter for several companies. Wendell was a Freemason, member of the Murat Temple, Oaklandon Masonic Lodge, a 32-Degree Mason and a member of the Scottish Rite Temple. He was a recipient of the Sagamore of the Wabash and he was commissioned the honor of Kentucky Colonel.
Wendell was a distinguished gentleman, a good family man, and provider with a strong work ethic.

THERESA ELIZABETH GARRETT, 81, husband, Ronald Garrett; children, Robin (Kevin) Faulkner, Ronald Garrett II, and Suzanne Korfhage; three grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; siblings, Billy and Mike Riney, Maryanne Fowler.
In 1962, Theresa met the love of her life, Ronald Garrett, while dancing at The Doghouse. They married on August 16, 1963.
Theresa was the head cook at Southwest Elementary School for 25 years. When she wasn’t taking care of her family, she spent her free time cooking, watching General Hospital or Young Sheldon, solving the crossword, or making baskets.

GLORIA J. HAGAN, 76, daughters, Michelle (Dwaine) Munsell and Lora (Donald) Goodman; five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; brothers, Glen (Patricia) and Roy Nicholson; preceded in death by her partner, Douglas Braswell.
Gloria enjoyed cooking, baking and spending time with family. She would attend numerous sporting and school events for her great-grandchildren. Gloria also loved music, dancing and flowers.

CHARLES L. MARINER II, 60, wife, Libby Mariner; children, Sarah (Drew Moore), Amy (Alex Nance), and John Mariner; seven grandchildren; siblings, Dr. Becky (Jay) Spacke, Elaine, Philip (Keri), and Dr. Jennifer Mariner; stepmother, Janie Mariner; stepfather, Robert Brown.
Chuck retired as a detective from IMPD. He enjoyed fishing, reading, listening to music, and yard work. Chuck especially loved spending time with his grandchildren.

DIANA CAROLINE RAY MUSIC, 83, husband, Richard Music; children, Toni, and Rick (Lori) Music, Terri (Rob) Lentz; sister, Mary Ann Ray Stewart; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.
Diane graduated from Sacred Heart High School. She was a member of St. Barnabas Catholic Church. Diane, along with husband, Dick, coached CYO kickball at St. Barnabas for several years, leading their teams to several City Championships.
Diane enjoyed many hours working on her jigsaw and crossword puzzles. She was very proud of her family and attended every school event.

NORMA ROSE OPELL PHILLIPS, 96, widow of Samuel Phillips; daughter, Jana Perkins, (Don), Lisa Prosser (Ed); grandchildren and a great-great-grandson; brother Donald Lee Opell.
Norma enjoyed sewing and there wasn’t a fabric store she hadn’t shopped. She loved tending to her flower gardens.
She was part of the Southside Symphony, Christian Women’s Club, Bible Study Fellowship, Embroidery Guild and Southport Presbyterian Church where she was involved with the Women’s Association, and DUOs. She also volunteered in the church office and helped prepare countless dinners held at the church.

LINDA KATHRYN REEVES, 80, children, Deana (Bob) Lauria, and Ken (Jennifer) Reeves; one granddaughter.
She worked in several industries and positions including as a dispatcher for the Indiana State Police and as a sales and service representative in the compressor industry for Brehob Corporation and Tri-State Compressed Air Systems.
She loved traveling, especially to the southwestern United States, reading, crocheting, cooking, and spending time with her large extended family.
A gathering will take place on Friday, July 7, 2023, from 1-3 p.m. at Wilson St. Pierre Funeral Service & Crematory, Greenwood Chapel.
ELIZABETH ANN “NAN” LIECHTY RUARK, 90, widow of Gerald Ruark; sisters, Phyllis Dumm, Joyce Frink Chandler, and Diane Rouch (Roger); bonus family, Sigi, Josephina, Alma, David, Elsa, and Arly Jimenez; neighbors, Peter Gomez and Nick Burrell.
Nan was a graduate of Southport High School and a proud alumnus. Nan taught English at Decatur High School. She taught photography and then became head of the Media Department. She also was a freelance photographer.
She, along with her husband, Gerald started Alpha Records and hosted many events and shows at hotels, selling collector vinyl records.

JUANITA R. SCHMIDT, 85, husband, Fred Schmidt, Sr.; children, Barbara (Randy), and Carol Miller (Donnie), Peggy Morrison (Franky), Lisa Orbaugh (Jeff); sisters, Jean Reckley and Virginia Corso; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild.
Juanita was a member of the Gospel of Deliverance Church and was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She was known for her immaculately clean home, green beans, cornbread and a fried chicken leg (almost daily). She had a sweet disposition and will be truly missed by her family and friends.

SARA M. “SALLY” SNYDER, 85, widow of William F. Snyder, Jr.; children, Jayne Snyder Bennett, Elizabeth Snyder Schmitt, and Catherine Snyder Keith; sister, Suzann Mitten Owen; five grandchildren.
She worked for the Indianapolis District Dental Society and became their Executive Director.
Sara was a member of Southport Presbyterian Church. She enjoyed hosting her grandchildren for weeks each summer to enjoy the beach, sailing lessons, blueberry picking, and band concerts. She enjoyed weekly bridge games.
A Celebration of Life will take place Saturday, July 15, 2023, at Southport Presbyterian Church. Arrangements handled by G. H. Herrmann Funeral Home.
JOAN LOUISE FOX WILHELM, 89, children Beth, Christopher (Elizabeth), Francis III (Pamela), Nicholas, and Benjamin (Karen); eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.
Joan lived most of her life on the Southside of Indianapolis where she and her family were parishioners of St. Roch Catholic Church and St. Mark Catholic Church, respectively. She attended Our Lady of Lourdes Grade School and graduated from St. Agnes High School in 1951.
