On November 23, 1953, in Portland, Oregon, he married the love of his life, Nancy Inez Hodecker; she preceded him in death on July 26, 2019. They had recently celebrated 65 wonderful years of marriage. She may have “drove him crazy” at times but he loved her dearly and was a devoted husband that supported her daily through her long illness. He was the best Papa that Blake could ever ask for. They had a truly unique bond and loved to fish for “wheat”.
Vern LOVED to play golf and was on the golf course as much as Nancy would “let him”. He shot his age at 65 and had (3) hole-in-ones in his lifetime. He even caught a salmon with his bare hands off the coast of Oregon! He was an amazing husband, father, Papa, friend, father-in-law and was loved by all who met him! He’s going to be missed by ALL of us!
He was a veteran of the U. S. Air Force, serving in the Korean War where he earned the Korean War Medal and United Nations Service Medal. He worked for the American Can Company in Portland and Eugene, Oregon and Indianapolis and Austin, Indiana before retiring as a plant manager. Vern was a member of the Seymour Elks, Eagles and VFW. Vern and Nancy co-owned TJ’s Walking Tacos, a popular booth at the Seymour Oktoberfest for many years.
Vern is survived by his children, Karen Johnson (Bruce Munk) and Alan Johnson; grandson, Blake Johnson; and brother, Frank Johnson. And his “other daughter” Jane Elzy.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Nancy Johnson; brothers, Robert and Herbert Johnson.
