Gary and Kathy Collings of Westfield have been actively involved with several Miata car clubs in Indiana and out of the state for 22 years. They joined the Indy Miata club in 1995 and have participated in cross-country road tours estimated at 400,000 miles.
With that many miles being traveled, they have worn out three sports cars. The couple currently drive a 2010 copper red MX-5 convertible. Its 2.0-liter engine produces 167 horsepower and has 16 valves and a six-speed manual transmission. This is the third generation of the Miata; its MSRP is $30,855. Purchased last summer, the Collingses have put 22,000 miles on it over the last 11 months.
The couple have traveled to Miata events in Toronto, Atlanta, Dallas, Daytona and the Poconos in Pennsylvania. In 2013 they joined the Utah Miata club in Salt Lake City so they could participate in that group’s adventure to the Great Northwest. They went back the following summer to participate with the club for a road trip throughout the American Southwest. The Collingses are also members of the Ohio and Florida Miata clubs.
Unlike some other clubs that wax and display their cars frequently, Miata owners drive and explore their world in a fantastic and reliable sports car. The Collingses are extremely proud of having traveled to 46 states in their sports car and getting to know such wonderful people.
Until next time, happy cruisin’!
