Cruising to Greenwood Village South

Residents of Greenwood Village South were treated to a classic car and motorcycle show June 20.

Dwane Martin, a well-known and longtime car enthusiast from the Southside, arranged to have some 27 car guys and bikers come to the retirement home for the benefit of residents who often cannot get around on their own.

And just because they aren’t real mobile, that doesn’t mean they don’t enjoy looking at nostalgic cars and motorcycles.

So these folks were excited to have a car show come to them. They got to pick their favorite cars and bikes for trophy presentations.

The Greenwood Village staff hosted a cookout as a gesture of appreciation for the car enthusiasts who gave up part of their day to bring back smiles and many memories to residents.

Until next time, happy cruising!

Cruising to Save The Suds

An extraordinary event took place June 4 as more than 425 owners of classic cars, motorcycles, street rods and modified vehicles teamed in an effort to help save The Suds drive-in restaurant in Greenwood from financial ruin.

The Suds has fallen on hard times in recent months. In 2015 construction work on the bridge and creek that passes nearby was started. The main road past the eatery was closed for months, and business was slow. When the road finally reopened the construction turned out to be faulty. Another company was hired in the spring to redo the project.

Businesses were once again disrupted as the road was shut down, and heavy rains contributed to delays. By May the restaurant was well into arrears on its bills and mortgage payments.

Then The Suds Cruisers stepped up to the plate. Led by local resident Jack Powers and a team of industrious volunteers, the group organized a car show called Save Our Suds, which attracted hundreds of spectators.

It was noted that “Car Craft Magazine” made a DVD and wrote an article about The Suds in 2005, after naming it one of the 10 best places to cruise in America with your classic car.

It was a truly remarkable testament to the love and loyalty of these car guys and gals for their beloved Suds drive-in and the weekly Saturday night cruise-ins.
 Until next time, happy cruising!
