UIndy homecoming festivities open to public

Saturday’ s parade and zip line will require closures on Hanna Ave.

PictureThe University of Indianapolis’ homecoming parade, which will proceed down Hanna Avenue, begins at 4 p.m. Saturday.
Homecoming festivities at the University of Indianapolis promise fun for everyone.
The inaugural Hound Hustle 5K on Saturday will traverse the campus and the University Heights neighborhood. The event starts at 9 ​a.m​., with registration beginning at 7:30 a.m. at Schwitzer Student Center, 1400 E. Hanna Ave. 


Registration is $20 in advance online, $25 the day of. Participants will receive T-shirts, and awards will be presented to the top three male and female finishers in each age division. 
At 10 a.m., children 10 and younger can run a lap around Smith Mall. Registration is required, and all runners will receive prizes.  


From 3-6 p.m., visitors can enjoy music, games, food, inflatables and free zip line rides at Tailgate Town outside the stadium. Academic departments will host activities and a caricature booth with UIndy alumnus Gary Barker, an acclaimed comic artist and longtime assistant cartoonist for Jim Davis’ “Garfield” strip. 
The parade will begin at 4 p.m. and proceed down Hanna.


The football game against Lincoln University follows at 6 p.m., and the homecoming queen and king will be crowned at halftime. Tickets are $5 for students and seniors, $8 for the general public. Children ages 12 and younger will be admitted free. 


On Thursday at 9 p.m., rock band the Plain White T’s (“Hey There Delilah”) will headline a concert at Nicoson Hall, with special guests This Wild Life. Tickets are $15 and available at www.uindy.edu/etc. Parking and shuttle service will begin at 7:30 p.m. outside Calvary Christian School at the northeast corner of Keystone and National avenues.


On Friday, Barker will discuss his career, the art of character design and the process of creating at comic book at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. at the DeHaan Fine Arts Center. 


The westbound lanes of Hanna between Shelby and State will be closed from 2-6 p.m. Saturday, and all lanes will be closed from 9-9:40 a.m. and from 3:45-4:45 p.m.
