SUBMITTED PHOTO Volunteers for the community garden sponsored by Bethany Lutheran Church gathered Oct. 16 for a pitch-in dinner to celebrate the garden’s inaugural year, during which more than 500 pounds of produce were harvested and distributed to the helpers and area food pantries. The gardeners received guidance from representatives for Purdue Extension. Bruce Byre, who served as the coordinator of the initiative, said everyone affiliated with the garden had giving hearts and a concern for the community. “We are thankful for all that was accomplished with Bethany Community Gardens. It was a great first year, and we are looking forward to 2019.” The volunteers include (front, from left) Steve and Betty Charnes, Linda Adams from Purdue Extension, gardens coordinator Bruce Bye, Virginia Roberts from Purdue Extension, Katie Parton; (second row) Shirley Clay, Marian Brinker, Patty Shannon, Ilze Bye, Sarah Ward, Elaine McCracken, Anne Marie Kiel, Martha Brown, Mary McMillan, Helen Moeller; (back) Ron Graybeal, Melissa Van Lue, Maria Gunter, Penny Bisel, Mark Gunter, Alisa Gumm, Terry Clow, Paula Clow, Kip Kistler, Grace Blume, Tom Brown, Marcia Cowan, Eileen Braun and Rosemary Dorsey.
